Another item that I believe that leads to chasing is the small business sector's reactive and not proactive marketing campaigns. Companies I talk to tend to think of their marketing campaign only when business is getting slow instead of in the constant basis. Usually it is because small businesses have to wear so many different hats and not a division to manage their marketing campaigns.

Backing up is one thing I totally did not do, lesson learned, and will check out that plugin. Sounds simple and easy was to get db backups.

For the social bookmarking I use Socialable, http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sociable/, by Peter Harkins. I used it when running Wordpress 2.1 and seems good with 2.5 as well. It allows for alot of various social sites that are far out of the norm.

The only problem with it is there are to many social sites submissions available or if only using a few the bottom of the page looks bare.

LoL, upgrading is never easy. I have to work on the slightly older platform for a while until some of the plugins are updated appropriately. Glad to hear you didn't break it permanently.

If you don't have it installed, I would recommned using
http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/ - but I don't know if it works with 2.5. It can be set to email you a copy of your database on a regular schedule. :)

What plugin are you using for your social submit icons? I like that layout better than some of the others I've wandered across.

Exactly Aaron! Last night I had a conversation with a friend regarding gaining more business in a declining market.

His solution was to undercut the competition and compete solely on price. My position is compete on value and level of service so people feel like they get more for their money. He couldn't get his mind around that competing on price is one strategy to target it a market segment and service and value are another.

Reminds me of a business strategy course back in college.

I was thinking about this one the other day and here is the thought. Google doesn't penalize sites for gaining massive links from Digg or if it was linked too by many bloggers. So I think the gaining of links to fast may be a tad over rated.

This price issue trips up a lot of small business owners. The problem is, if you don't have a clear, compelling, well-articulated answer to the question, "Why should I do business with you versus any and all of the alternatives that are available to me?", then you'll be forced to compete on price...simply because people don't see or understand the added value.

So there are two parts to this coin. Yes, there is a perception and psychology dependent on price. But it's also important to communicate very clearly what sets your offering apart, so you can justify that price.

You've hit the nail on the head. Lack of consistency and cohesiveness are probably the biggest marketing mistakes that small businesses make. Consequently, small business owners are often left chasing after the latest tactic that happens to be in fashion. It's short-sighted thinking.

The best marketing systems are just that: SYSTEMS. They present a cohesive message across all their marketing channels (web, direct mail, advertising, etc.) and are delivered consistently over the long haul.

It is also good to avoiding link building software to generate a lot of backlinks quickly. The slow and steady way is safe and trusted. Good point regarding the variety of linking strategies. If social media is the only outlet then other opportunities will be over looked, thanks for the reminder!

You have to be careful that you aren't too successful in gaining links. Gaining links too fast will also get you a google penalty too. I think you have include social networking into your link building strategies along with reciprocals, one way links, directories, etc. Best not to have all of your eggs in one basket.
